      Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca’s epic journey began when he was appointed as the treasurer and second in command of an expedition to the New World led by Panfilo Narvaez. Narvaez had secured a commission from the King Carlos of Spain that gave him the right to conquer and colonize all the land between Florida and the Rio de Las Palmas in eastern Mexico.
